First, Bastion in turret form acquires a big shield at the front but a newly vulnerable point on his back — which any flanking character can take advantage of.
But by far the most useful thing to know about Bastion is that you can corner-peek him as Widowmaker, for example and aim at the exposed edges of his shield, without his being able to see you and return fire.
The most baller thing to do, of course, is walk right out in front of him as Genji and deflect every single bullet back into his smug robot face.
And this may just be the tip of the iceberg: Characters like Zarya depend on synchronising their ults with others, and where one ultimate can give an enemy team problems, two or three makes things inevitable.
An easy way to prep for this when playing solo is just hitting tab to see the stats. Hence, one supposes, his hammer.
Every character in Overwatch has a few dedicated options in the controls screen and, OK, we may be approaching the point of nerd return.
Also, toggle mode for her beam will let you look around much easier while still healing. These things become obvious, but the potential of her other basic abilities can be magnified in the right company.
This means you can take a risk to chase down opponents with the dash and rely on the reset to escape. Zarya's ultimate can be devastating with other characters ultimates, like Mei's Blizzard and Tracer's Pulse Bomb.
Try to synergize with your teammates to pull off ridiculous combinations! Genji has the ability of deflecting any incoming projectives every few seconds back towards the source, but it doesn't block projectives like lasers and Mei's freeze ray.
Genji's Swift Strike can be used to reposition himself, but primarily can be useful to secure kills on a target.
After securing a kill your Swift Strike's cooldown is immediately refreshed and you can use it again. Genji's ultimate Dragonblade is capable of killing most targets "normal" targets immediately, tanks will require a few strikes to kill.
Genji is much better in close range than he may appear, but don't forget to use his alternate fire fan of knives in close range situations when there may be multiple targets to hit.
Soldier 76 has the unique ability to lock onto characters with his ultimate to guarentee high amounts of damage.
So, try and break line of sight with him for the duration so that you don't end up getting caught for massive amounts of damage!
Soldier 76 may be an offensive character, but his Biotic Field can be a quick way for him to regenerate health for himself and his teammates while they're in the fray.
Bastion can one of the most devastating defensive characters in the game, however he can only have his shield facing one area at a time. So, sneak up on him with fast and sneaky characters like Reaper and Tracer.
Bastion is capable of self-repairing when he's at low HP similar to Roadhog , but he cannot move, fire, or do anything while he's doing so.
Take advantage of this when possible! VA has one of the best ultimates in the game self destruction , which can damage any enemy characters in a large radius.
If you are in the blast zone you'll have a red caution indicator there is a high chance you will die immediately! Take cover and shelter in nearby buildings!
VA has unlimited ammo and can fire indefinitely when she's in her mech, so never assume that she's going to have reload before you have to again!
Winston's ultimate Primal Rage refreshes the cooldown of his jumps much more frequently. When you go berserk, jump around and send enemies flying as frequently as you can.
Winston also doubles his HP when he uses Primal Rage, but it's important to use this ability when you're low on HP to begin with because it gives you such a massive heal!
It's a quick way to overwhelm and surprise your opponents! Mei is a character that you normally do not want to engage with on your own.
If you end up getting frozen, it may be too late to turn around a fight! Try to engage on a Mei with other teammates to ensure a kill.
Mei is capable of drawing enemy fire upon herself, quickly using her ultimate ability Blizzard and then encasing herself in ice until it procs to setup her team.
Be careful when you over commit against her! Mei's wall can be destroyed if it's in a bad spot, never just assume that you always have to go around it!
Hanzo's ultimate Dragonstrike summons a dragon that passes through walls and any other objects in it's way. Try to position it in ways to corner your opponents, or with the help of other teammates who are pinning them down with suppressive fire!
Hanzo's scatter arrow can be devastating in close corners while you're inside of buildings, the arrows will bounce off of any nearby objects and bounce again and again for a short while.
It can be a tricky way to snipe targets behind Reinhardt's shield. Widowmaker may be labeled as defense, but she is one of the most devastating characters to play against if you're a squishy.
If the enemy team has a Widowmaker, try to communicate with your team about her position at all times so that characters like Winston can jump upon her to finish her off quickly!
Widowmaker may be a sniper, but her rifle can be used to fire more rapidly in short ranged situations if she's discovered by other characters.
Never assume that she's just going to be a free kill! Mercy is capable of empowering teammates with a healing ray, or a damaging ray. It's important to switch to a damage ray when you're noticing that your teammate isn't taking a lot of damage so they can secure some extra kills faster.
Don't always think that you're JUST doctor! Mercy is capable of flying short distances to get to enemies. Use your allies as a way to escape from bad situations if you've been cornered by enemies.
Your pistol generally won't be enough to keep you safe against most foes! You can turn on a toggle healing for Mercy under control settings specifically for Mercy.
You can also disable preference to flying to your current healing target, allowing you to be more mobile around the battlefield. Zenyatta is capable of placing orbs upon teammates, but also upon enemies.
If you've been hitten with the Orb of Discord, prepare to take cover if you notice multiple enemies around. The easiest way to remove the Orb of Discord is to stay out of the line of sight of Zenyatta for a few seconds.
The big sparkly glowy guy with arms may look like a good target to shoot when he lights up for his ultimate, but in reality he will take no damage, and ends up healing anybody near him as well.
Try to distance him from his team when he does this ability, potentially with an ability like Mei's Ice Wall, Winston's Ultimate, or a Lucio Knock-back.
Zenyatta has to keep you in his Line of Sight to heal you, but that also means you have to try and stay in the Line of Sight of your allies.
If you try to take cover too frequently as Zenyatta, you won't actually be able to heal your teammates! And, that's all I have folks!
Some of these tips may be obvious to some, but for those that go into the game a bit blind, I hope some of them are useful! I hope that you enjoy your beta weekend and that we're all playing the game soon!
Keep in mind guys, a lot of these tips may be outdated. If I get some time here before release, I may revisit this post, or remake it and update it, but just remember SOME of these tips may not actually be still relevant.
This was actually really helpful, unlike most of the posts on the sub right now. Well, no, an old German dude is not something I'd really dig as a gay guy, although he's very cool in his futuristic knight armor.
Lucio , however, seems like such a sweet and laid back guy, and he's really handsome as well. Young Reaper Gabriel Reyes is also kinda sexy: D Hanzo is a beit weird for my tastes but his brother, Genji, may be an android but I feel very endeared to him because of his story.
From map to map, and fight to fight, a team and the characters currently on them could be stronger, or weaker at that moment. It's important to be mindful of this, and what roles and characters your team might be lacking, or has an over-abundance of, and then shift things around to better balance the group.
If you're playing a Tank , don't be shy, jump right into the fight and start laying into people. It's your job to cause chaos, confuse the enemy, and provide an enticing target to shoot at while your allies do most of the killing.
On the flip side, a Support character should be hanging back. With the exception of Lucio , you generally want to be out of sight, and well protected by your team.
If a Support character is the first one running in a fight, it's likely going to end poorly for you! Just because a character might be classed as an Offensive character, this doesn't mean they can't be a good defender.
Soldier 76 is a great defender for example, thanks to his long range, mobility and self heal. On the flip side of that coin, a Defense character doesn't have to stick to just Defending.
Widowmaker is a great example of a character, who when played aggressively, can be just as strong on offense or defense. The style in which you play your character will often trump the classification they have been given.
Supports are generally weak, squishy characters, so if you see one of them getting attacked, help them out! It can't be stated enough how valuable even a single support is, so letting them die is a huge mistake!
Genji has a skill called Deflect, that many people will use to deflect incoming basic attacks, which is perfectly fine.
However, did you know it can deflect nearly any projectile in the game? With the proper timing, you can deflect almost anything, including some Ultimate Attacks, like Hanzo 's dragons.
Additionally, it will send the projectiles wherever the cursor is aiming and you can use it to send an opponent's attacks right back at them or even at another enemy!
When possible, secure kills with your dash because kills reset the cooldown of your dash ability.
Use them to harass snipers like Hanzo and Widowmaker , and to damage stationary Bastions and Torbjorn turrets from relative safety.
Tracer 's ability to rewind time isn't only useful for getting out of a bad situation. It can also be used to remove any negative effects being applied to you, like an Orb of Discord from Zenyatta.
It can also save your life from falls, or let you warp back to a higher ledge that you had recently jumped off of!
Reinhardt has many tricks up his sleeve, but his bread and butter is the energy wall he can project, that can absorb damage.
There are many basic ways to use the wall, but you should also consider doing some more unorthodox tactics at times.
For instance, does your team have a couple Bastion players? Stand in front of them, and you'll protect them as they rain death on your enemies. The same can be done for Torbjorn and his turrets.
Sometimes your best offense as a Reinhardt, is protecting those around you! This makes Reinhardt a surprisingly excellent choice for foiling Torbjorn turrets, Bastions, and anyone standing still behind another Reinhardt to aim because they think they are safe.
To make the most out of this, line up a Flame Strike to hit all your downed opponents afterwards, and finish with a charge to pin and kill the first target, while sending the rest sailing through the air.
Seriously, put it down. Widowmaker is a very weak character. She has low health, and is an easy target while sniping, so it's up you to find a sneaky place to snipe from.
That's where her grappling hook comes in. Use it to get into odd spots on the map, where players have a tough time reaching, or can't get to at all without their own grappling hook.
On top of that she has her spider mine, which when detonated releases poison gas that slows and damages the person who set it off. You can use this as an alarm, placing it behind you in case someone manages to sneak up on you.
Alternatively, fire the mine aggressively into a group of enemies, and it'll likely go off before anyone is able to shoot it, slowing and damaging them for a few seconds.
The elevated platforms on either side of capture point A on Volskaya Industries are just one of many areas where Widowmaker can use her zipline to easily switch between two sniper perches on a whim.
In other words, if you fire in short bursts you can keep up relatively sustained fire with perfect accuracy over long ranges.
Firing like this will dramatically improve your effectiveness in mid- to long-range engagements. Looking for an easy-to-play guy?
Soldier 76 is the man for you! He is very strong in all categories, and is an excellent starting character for learning the game, hence why he is in the tutorial mission!
Don't rely on him too much though, as he can be easily countered by the likes of Genji , but he's a great starter character for fresh players.
Helix Rocket is a versatile, powerful tool. With a direct hit from it and a quick burst of follow-up fire, Soldier 76 can take down any non- Tank in the blink of an eye.
Soldier 76 is the only hero in Overwatch with a sprint ability, and it allows him to disengage from bad initiations, rapidly flank, or race to the objective at the last second to force overtime.
Pharah can obviously take to the sky at-will, but she can get even more height and forward momentum by shooting her Concussive Blast ability at her feet behind her as she takes to the air.
This allows her to get to some previously unreachable places. Pharah is an absolutely devastating character to deal with.
She does tons of damage, and her barrage skill rains death down on the enemy. She is particularly good as a team player, capitalizing on her enemies when they are trapped or in closed in places.
The beefy character of Roadhog is one of the few characters who can operate independently of his team.
He has his own heal, which is very strong and on a low cooldown, so he is able to roam the map, hook targets, take some damage then heal up and carry on.
This is often the best way to play him, as your're able to surprise people by flanking them. Something that might not be apparent at first is that Zenyatta actually needs vision for the Orb of Harmony and Discord to work.
Once you toss an orb onto someone, make sure you keep an eye on them at all times, as there is only a 3 second grace period for you to look away, before the orb will shut off and return to you.
Hanzo has a lot of tricks up his sleeve, but did you know his Scatter Arrow ability can be used for more than clearing a room?
If the arrow impacts right beside beside a player usually at the base of their feet , all the splitting pieces will hit them, virtually guaranteeing a one hit kill.
Enemy staying behind cover? Stick one with your sonar arrow and when they return you can see exactly how many are back there.
One big misconception with Reaper is that his Ultimate makes him invincible. This is far from the truth! You can still be shot, and a fast acting Widowmaker can ruin your fun in a heartbeat with a well placed headshot.
Although Death Blossom is a great skill, you still need to be careful where you use it! A fun fact about this wheel though, is that it can climb up most small walls and ledges, allowing you to reach players who might be in the air, or up high on the roofs of buildings!
Mei is a very unique character as she is very self sufficient, but also incredible as a team player. Her main attack freezes you in place, making headshots very easy, and her Ultimate attack can freeze a huge area, while also dealing damage.
Combo that with a Graviton Surge from Zarya , and you have one very stuck, very dead enemy team. Mercy is a great support, with her ability to fly to allies and heal them.
You may spend so much time healing, that you forget you can also buff your allies. Her alternate fire powers up your allies, allowing them to deal bonus damage.
This buff should not be taken lightly. You increase their damage by a substantial amount, and can turn even the weakest character into a powerhouse.
